Bone Densitometry

Bone density (densitometry) or DEXA scans or bone densitometry use a minute dose of x-ray to evaluate bone density. Often several parts of the body are tested including the spine, hip and sometimes the wrist.

The exam is noninvasive and takes about 10 minutes. The bone density scan measurements are compared to a larger population and are evaluated for bone loss including more severe bone loss known as osteoporosis. The bone loss can make someone more susceptible to fractures. These measurements are often done repeatedly to check for worsening and to see the response to treatment.
